AlChemiSSts

Alternative Chemicals and Materials integrating Safety, Sustainability, new Production technologies and Socio-economic aspects

The AlChemiSSts project tests and demonstrates the applicability of the Safe and Sustainable by (SSb) framework. This framework supports the development of innovative chemicals or materials to replace Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs). These replacements are intended for high-impact markets, including surfactants, plasticisers, and flame retardants in value chains such as metalworking fluids (MWFs), lubricants, insulation foams and paints, safety boots and wellies, battery cases, and sports mats.

Concept Highlights

AlChemiSSts deals with the design and development of new substances and materials for use as surfactants, flame retardants, and plasticiser substitutes. These materials will be tested in real industrial applications as a proof of concept for the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) framework.

The project will identify barriers to SSbD implementation across the entire value chain, considering all life cycle stages for targeted substances, materials, and applications. These barriers include data/knowledge gaps, limitations of labour resources and equipment at the process level, and challenges in applying available risk assessment tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

The project will identify barriers to the implementation of the SSbD framework at all life cycle stages for targeted substances, materials, and applications. These barriers include data/knowledge gaps, limitations of labour resources and equipment at the process level, and the applicability of available risk assessment, LCA, or SEA tools. The project will also define and communicate proposed solutions and recommendations to foster and incentivise the application of the SSbD framework.
